Auditions for Aladdin

Our first show for Caledonia Community Player's (CCP) 2014-2015 season, is Aladdin.  CCP puts on 2 shows for local elementary children every season.  These shows perform during the day at the Duncan Lake Middle School Performing Arts Center, a grand old proscenium stage facility.  The audience arrives in buses; the children excited to be on a field trip, and excited to see classic tales told by our always talented actors.  As an actor, you can expect to perform in front of 150 - 400 school children each show.  Then, on Saturday, we perform for family and friends.  We look for adult actors to fill the lead roles, and can cast younger actors as the script calls for them.  Then, in the summer, we do 1 big show for the community, this year - Shrek the Musical.

Aladdin is the non-Disney, non-musical tale of Aladdin and the Magic Lamp.  There is much opportunity for improv, creativity and action in the script.  Looking for actors willing to draw in the audience, to show them what live theater can be.

The classic tale starts out in the streets of ancient Arabia where the Grand Sultan's bungling guards are trying to catch the street-savvy Aladdin for allegedly kidnapping Princess Adora.  Aladdin meets the Court Magician who tricks him into entering a cave to fetch an old lamp.  Aladdin accidentally rubs the lamp, and discovers the Genie, who bestows wishes.  Aladdin's adventures continue until he finally learns that greatness and strength comes from within, not from without, and the sign of a true prince is kindness and goodness.

11 actors needed, male and female, high-school age on up.

Roles, with # of lines:

Aladdin - a poor hungry beggar with a large heart (248)
Adora - A young princess, who feels herself a prisoner in her castle (51)
Aladdin's Mother - A caring woman who considers her son a prince of the streets (29)
The Magician - An evil sorcerer (118)
Grand Sultan - The sheik who insists on the best for his daughter (62)
Bular - the Storyteller (22)
Genie - A stong protector (60)
Suleyman - Aladdin's old friend (32)
3 Guards - Sultan's bodyguards (41, 37, 24)

I will cast male/female interchangeably, except for Aladdin and Adora.

Auditions will be Sat. Sep. 6, 10 - 12, and Mon. Sep. 8, 7 -9, at the Duncan Lake Middle School Performing Arts Center.  You do not have to be at both auditions.

I am asking that children younger than high school NOT attend the auditions, but I will have a legal pad at auditions, and if children are interested, I ask that parents come and complete the sheet.  After Aladdin is cast, I will see how many children I need, and will get in touch with the parents at that point.

Time Commitment:  You will need to be available Wed. Oct. 22 from 8 am - 2 pm and Thurs. Oct 23 from 8 am - 12 noon.  Also, Sat. Oct. 25, 6pm-11 pm.  IF WE HAVE WEATHER ISSUES, and either Wed. or Thursday is canceled, you should be available Friday Oct. 24.  Since most of the actors work, we try not to have to do that.

I try to block rehearsals to minimize your time at rehearsals.  We jump around a lot, to keep actors from sitting around doing nothing at rehearsals.  Expect Oct. 14 - Oct. 21 to be busy, with rehearsal on Sat. Oct. 18.

Any questions at all, please email Pam at ccpdirector@gmail.com.

EDIT: ANSWERS TO SOME COMMON QUESTIONS:

1. Rehearsals: I am planning on Mon/Wed/Fri rehearsals, 6:30 -9:30.  However, I really have them in "bits" based on the characters, so you wouldn't be needed all those nights. Some of the scenes only have 2 characters, so I only work the scenes those characters are in.   In Sept. there would be a few rehearsals, and in early Oct. a few.  Things really pick up Oct. 14, 15, 17, and 18, because that is a week before show.

I am very flexible with rehearsals.  I really suggest you try out, and try to let me know on your audition form what days you do have off, if you know, for rehearsals.  I can work around almost everything.

2. Prep:  No prep needed for auditions, cold reads and some improv.  Don't worry, it will be fun!

3.  Do you have to live/go to school in Caledonia: No, but that is where all rehearsals will be, and where we perform.  Elementary schools from all around will be in the audience.
