CHARACTER DESCRIPTIONS FOR SEUSSICAL (TYA)

Here are the character descriptions for the primary characters in Suessical.  Note, I thought I needed 6 women, 7 men, but I need 7 women!  Also Note, the Cat in the Hat can be cast as man or woman.

 The Cat in the Hat

The essence of mischief, fun, and imagination.  The Cat stirs things up, causes trouble, but always sets things right again, helping Jojo to discover the power of his own imagination as they create the story for the show together.  Looking for a physically adept male or female actor, who can play many comic cameos and is comfortable improvising with the young audience.
Vocal range: tenor/baritone (Male) The range if a Female version is not given in the script.

 Jojo

Is a "Thinker", a smart child with a wild imagination.  By the end of the show, he learns what it means to be a responsible member of his world, using the power and possibilities of his own Thinks.
Vocal range: soprano/alto

 Horton the Elephant

Is a gentle appealing giant.  He is steadfast, responsible, and always tries to do the right thing for his friends.  He is imaginative and receptive to the world around him.  He is not self-conscious.  Horton's view of the world never changes -he believes in its goodness.
Vocal range: tenor/baritone

 Gertrude McFuzz

Is  very self-conscious and aware that her one-feather tail isn't perfect.  Gertrude changes during the show from a vain, nervous, shy bird into one with the power to protect and care for a baby elephant bird.  She stops worrying about her looks and grows up.
Vocal range: soprano

 Mayzie La Bird

Is self-centered, selfish, and vain.  Mayzie will never admit to her own flaws.  She manipulates anyone she can into doing what she wants.  But Mayzie isn't all bad.  In giving up her egg to Horton once and for all, she has a moment of generosity, she realizes she isn't the kind of person who would be a good parent, and she does the best thing she can for the egg.
Vocal range: soprano/alto

 Sour Kangaroo

Isn't really sour at all.  She's just got a lot of attitude.  She's loud, brassy, and a lot of fun.
Vocal range: soprano/alto

 The Wickersham Brothers

Are 3 monkeys who like to tease, play pranks, and get a kick out of making mischief.  They enjoy hanging around with one another and playing off one another.   Looking for some physical comedy here.
Vocal range: mixed ranges

 Bird Girls

1 singing Trio who help tell the story.
Vocal range: mixed ranges

 Mr. Mayor

The Mayor of Whoville, worried about his responsibility for the world of the Whos, as well as with his son!
Vocal range: tenor/baritone

Mrs. Mayor

The wife of the mayor, who is worried about her world, and her son.
Vocal range: soprano

Circus Animals, Jungle Animals, and Whos.

We’ll be able to add some younger actors to the play.  The auditions for the animals will involve some creative movement, some singing, and some improv games, not so much reading from the script.  There are about 10 numbers in the play where animals or Whos participate.

Any questions.... email ccpdirector@gmail.com   Emails answered once a day, in the evening.
